PSV's Next Academy Star: The Rapid Rise of Fabian Merién

Every generation at PSV Eindhoven seems to produce a defender who catches the eye years before he's supposed to be ready. The latest is Fabian Merién, a seventeen-year-old centre-back from Veldhoven who has spent the last two seasons quietly doing everything a club could ask of a teenage prospect; starring for the reserves, forcing his way into senior matchday squads, and collecting Dutch youth caps at almost every age group along the way.

From the Academy to the First Team

Merién joined PSV's academy at the age of twelve and worked his way up through the club's youth ranks, captaining sides at various age levels as he went. His talent was obvious early: after watching him produce a standout display for PSV's Under-17s against Feyenoord, head coach Peter Bosz personally invited him to train with the first team, remarkable for a player who was still just fifteen at the time. Merién took his opportunity, featuring in senior pre-season friendlies against Anderlecht and Club Brugge and even earning a starting role in a match against Paderborn, holding his own alongside full internationals more than a decade older than him.

That early exposure paved the way for his senior competitive bow. Merién made his official debut for PSV's first team on 16 December 2025, coming on as a substitute for Noah Fernández in the 76th minute of a 3-0 KNVB Cup win over amateur side GVVV Veenendaal, a routine victory, but a landmark night for the teenager all the same. Bosz turned to him again a few months later, this time in the Eredivisie, handing Merién a cameo in a 2-0 away win over Sparta Rotterdam on 11 April 2026. The timing made the appearance all the sweeter: PSV had already wrapped up their third consecutive Dutch league title by that point, meaning Merién's first taste of Eredivisie football came with the champions already crowned, a low-pressure environment perfectly suited to blooding a young talent.

A Mainstay for Jong PSV

If the senior appearances have so far been fleeting, Merién's form for Jong PSV, PSV's reserve side, which competes in the professional second tier, has been anything but. He made his debut for the team in May 2025 against Excelsior Rotterdam and quickly established himself as a first-choice defender, going on to make 33 appearances in the Eerste Divisie during the 2025-26 season alone, chipping in with a goal and an assist from the back. That level of regular, competitive senior football at such a young age is precisely the kind of grounding PSV's academy is designed to provide, and Merién has taken full advantage of it.

He made 33 second-tier appearances at seventeen and PSV extended his contract a year and a half before they needed to.

The early signs from the current campaign suggest he's kicked on again. Through the opening matches of the 2026-27 Eerste Divisie season, Merién has posted an average match rating above 7.3, comfortably among the better-performing centre-backs in the league, while continuing to captain age-group sides on the international stage. Versatile enough to play as either a central defender or a right-back, he has built a reputation within the club for his composure, physical development and leadership qualities, traits that persuaded PSV to tie him down to fresh terms well before they needed to.

Backed by the Club and by his Country

PSV's confidence in Merién has been reflected directly in his contract situation. He signed his first professional deal in May 2024, a contract that ran through to the summer of 2027 and rather than let it run down, the club moved in August 2025 to extend it by a further year. Doing so more than a year and a half before the original terms were even due to expire. It's the kind of early show of faith usually reserved for a club's most highly rated prospects.

The Dutch federation has shown similar conviction. Merién progressed through the Netherlands' youth pyramid at a brisk pace, representing the Under-15s in 2023 before moving up to the Under-16s, then the Under-17s, where he scored his first international goal, and on to the Under-18s plus, most recently, the Under-19s. Few players in his age bracket have accumulated caps across that many different youth levels in such a short space of time, and it underlines how highly he's regarded well beyond Eindhoven.

What Comes Next

At just seventeen, Merién is still firmly a project rather than the finished article, and the gap between cameo appearances in cup and league fixtures and being a genuine first-team regular remains significant. But the trajectory is unmistakable: a player trusted by Bosz as a mid-teenager, a defensive lynchpin for PSV's reserves, a fixture across every age level of Dutch international football, and now a defender the club has moved early to protect on the contract front. If Merién continues progressing at this rate, it won't be long before those senior cameos start turning into sustained runs in PSV's back line.
